Gatorfoam has a hard brittle shell. A table saw is the best way to cut it. Use a blade for laminates like formica or plastics (10 inch diameter, 80 tooth triple chip works great). Hand-cutting will usually lead to chipping of the laminate unless you are very patient- lightly score again and again and again etc.

Foams made of polyester (PES), polyethylene (PE), or polyurethane (PUR) are well suited for laser cutting, laser engraving, and laser marking. Common uses for foam materials such as these include suitcase inserts or padding, and for seals.

Laser processing of foam core board is possible with either a 9.3 or 10.6 micron CO2 laser with no discernible difference in process quality. The 1.06 micron fiber laser is not recommended for use with this material as the wavelength is not readily absorbed.

Gatorfoam needs no special preparation before priming or painting. The surface should be clean and free of any oil or contaminates. If the surface has become lightly soiled or scratched, it may be hand sanded with silicon carbide dry paper 180 grit or finer.
